Some encounters change the course of a life. My meeting with Hom Nguyen is undoubtedly one of them.

We met in 2009, during a period when I was working as a bartender. By chance, we quickly connected and became friends. Beyond the human connection, I soon discovered an extraordinary artist, deeply driven by his art, his discipline, and a sincere vision of the creative process.

I then had the privilege and opportunity to work alongside him for several years. This experience became a true school of learning, far beyond anything that could be taught in a traditional environment. I worked as his assistant, following his daily practice, his research, his high standards, and his relationship with materials and detail.

Learning a Rare Craft

Hom Nguyen passed on invaluable skills to me, particularly in the art of leather patinas applied to shoes—an expertise closely associated with the world of Berluti and, more broadly, the excellence of luxury craftsmanship.

It all began with French leather shoes, through meticulous work on color, nuances, depth, and the controlled aging of materials. There, I learned patience, observation, and precision—fundamental principles that continue to guide my work today.

This journey did not stop there. I followed and worked alongside him for several years, enriching my artistic vision and refining my own perspective. That period shaped both my professional and artistic identity and remains one of the foundations of what I create today through Margot Del Coco.

A Lasting Influence

Beyond technique, Hom Nguyen taught me a way of thinking about art: sincere, committed, and demanding. His influence can be found in every project I create, in my relationship with materials, colors, and the emotions that a piece should convey.

This article is, above all, a tribute. To a mentor. To an artist. To an encounter that profoundly shaped my journey.
